Disk usage spikes to 100% with low transfer rates

Hey all.

Recently I've been having some pretty annoying problems on my Windows 10 desktop relating to my C drive (HDD) having some very large usage spikes, often to 100%. RAM and CPU are fine. However, the disk transfer rate rarely jumps above a few megabytes It's only seemed to happen recently and I first noticed it a week or so ago and it seems to be getting worse.

I'm worried my HDD may be dying, but I need to rule out all other possibilities first. It's most noticable in some PC games (mainly Overwatch) I've been playing lately (framerate divebombs from the 100s to still frames randomly - unplayable), but it also happens at other times making me doubt it's the games at fault (note that the same games ran flawlessly for me last month). I don't think it's the game specifically but I do think the game uses the most resources on my PC and if it gets worse I'll start to see my pc choke against even lighter loads. My network can be a bit jumpy at times however, and while that would create lag, I doubt it would give me any issues with disk usage or framerate stuttering, would it?

So far I've done HDD diagnostic checks, which come up with no negative results. I've also tried a multitude of solutions I've found online, such as disabling superfetch, windows search, notifications, prefetch on google chrome, and windows update. I've set my power plan from balanced to high performance. I've tried uninstalling skype. Nothing I've tried so far makes a noticable difference and I'm out of ideas. It happens in-game by far the most, but occasionally happens when I'm just on the desktop doing nothing. It's infrequent enough to make me wonder if it could in fact be an issue more with the game, but it's so hard for me to pin down what the issue is.

I sincerely hope it's not just my HDD crapping out on me, which it may be, but I want to be certain before I have to go through the whole process of transferring my files and reinstalling OS on the new one.

I really could use some help here. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for replying.

It's almost always "System and compressed memory", but I've never seen it go above 0.4 MB/s even under a 100% usage. This is a main reason why I'm having so much problem pinpointing what the issue is. Occasionally avast will go up to a few MB/s but it's rare and not the reason for the issue as far as I'm aware.
In-game when it happens, it doesn't seem to be the game application itself, but System and compressed memory seems to jump up quite a bit. 20 MB/s or so in the last time I played it, but it seems very inconsistent in the amount and can still lag out with only 0.4MB/s when on the desktop.

apparently this is a common issue after doing some googling

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/system-and-compressed-memory-service-high-cpu/421c32bd-e65b-4339-9473-db775e50096a

apparently this compressed memory is the first step in getting rid of the page file in future windows versions. it just trying to compress stuff in ram to free up memeory but of course its also compressing stuff in the swap file which is on the hard drive so its sending lots of small read /write commands (read swap data compress it then rewrite it back to swap file)

ive seen all sort of different ways people claimed to have fixed it from just defragmenting there hard drive to uninstalling extra bloatware they had on there system. apparently also just disabling the swap file will prevent it from doing it at all. I just haven't come across anyone saying how to just stop windows from compressing stuff to begin with.

disabling swap file is not an option for you with only 4gb ram but mabe setting the swap file to a fixed size would stop it (about 8gb)

I'm going to look as some things though if I find any actal solutions ill pass them on.

people swore just disable notifications issue would go away.

" had this issue and it seems some others encountered the bug. What fixed it for me is going to settings, system, notifications, and turning off "show me tips about Windows." I believe that was the one causing problems, though I turned all of them off besides the app notifications. System processes went back down after a restart and haven't spiked since."
"I stumbled upon this three months after you, five months after the original suggestion... and this is still a problem!

This fix did work for me (*********is my computer so much faster), although I had to turn off all notifications-- not that I ever used them."
