Display cuts out then computer stops working.

It's been happeneing recently and I'm not sure what's going on. It seems to happen when i am in a menu of a game, for some reason it never happens during play. I have dual monitors and my main monitor goes black and the secondary gets stuck on a strange pattern of very thin either blue or green horizontal bars. My sound works for a short time and then just stops all together and the only way to fix it is to restart. please help.
My pc is cutom build with
AMD Radeon 7950 graphics card
Intel i5 2500k quad core 3.30GHz
8 gig corsair DDR3-1600

EDIT: make sure you have latest drivers first. and test again before you do the instructions below.

I'd suspect bad RAM or an unstable graphics card.
go back to stock clocks and run prime95 for a couple of hours with furmark, check temps within a few minutes to ensure it's not an overheating problem.

Sorry what do you mean stock clocks? also what is prime p5 and furmark?

I ran furmark and it kept happening so I opened it up and found a ton of dust inside the workings. that seems to have fixed it. thanks for the help!
