Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered

Hello,

I have an eMachines ET1831
Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60 GHz
4.00 GB Ram
Windows 7 64-bit
NVIDIA GeForce GT 220

I use this machine as a DVR, and it worked fine for 2 years. Returned from a break where we left the computer running, and 2 days later, started to have the above referenced problem (from the event log.) Usually it tells me twice that it has recovered successfully, but then the monitors lose input and go black. I have to hard-reboot.

I tried rolling back the driver, same problem. I got the latest driver fron nvidia 306.97, same problem.

I downloaded speedfan, and it shows my GPU temp is 95C. This is without running Windows Media Center. With WMC running it is up to 114 and climbing.

Core 0 and Core 1 temps are 41C and 36C.

There is 1 fan listed with a speed of 928 RPM. The power supply came with the box from the factory.

I'm wondering if it is the power supply or the graphics card, but I'm not sure what to test next

It looks like your video card is overheating. You can download MSI afterburner and set the fan speeds yourself

your gpu is dust bound or has a fan failure. the temps should be at idle for the gpu 50-60c. your pushing the card right now near it failure point. i would open the case and blow it out. then look at the fan and see if it spining..to slugging along really moving.

How old is your gpu ?

Mine was 4 years old when it started to gave that error and black screen. I tried cleaning the dust, increasing the fan speed etc. But those were not the solution for me.

I tried underclocking with Msi Afterburner and it didn't give any errors after that.

Try reducing the core clock to 575mhz and memory clock to 875mhz. If that doesn't solve your problem try reducing more. But i think that would help.

I tried to set the fan speeds (min and max 100%) using SpeedFan, but still stays around 930 rpm.

I've opened it up and blown it out - wasn't as bad as I've seen it before. Temp started at 57C and is climbing.

The fan seems to be spinning smoothly, but I'm wondering if it's just not fast enough? Not noisy at all. I'll try downloading MSI afterburner too.

You might want to repaste the gpu while you're at it.

I've attempted to change the fan speed via MSi Afterburner to 100%, but the fan speed doesn't appear to change.

It still shows 925 rpm on SpeedFan (I have undone the changes I made to SpeedFan that attempted to control the speed.) MSi Afterburner shows 100% fan speed, but I didn't hear a change in the fan at all.

The GPU is same age as the computer, about 3 years. Temp now is up to 75C - not running WMC, just chrome and these monitoring windows.

I reduced the core clock from 625 to 575. The memory clock was already at 400.

Is a repaste worth it for a GT 220?

I would see if the old video card is under warranty. if not there are a lot of newer cards that are not that much money.

Some display drivers do not play well with Windows Aero.
Right click on your desktop and select Personalize.
Scroll down to Basic and High Contrast Themes and select a theme, such as Windows 7 Basic.

You may also want to adjust the settings on your graphics card to handle all video through the Graphics Processor.
