Display drivers keep crashing

So I'm using and Lenovo y410p with a gt 750m. I noticed that when playing games, the display driver would crash, and once it recovers, the game runs MUCH slower. I found that a solution to this was to down-clock gpu's performance using MSI afterburner. Can anyone explain why this works and how an alternative solution that doesn't involve under-clocking the gpu?

Are you monitoring your GPU and CPU temps? Could be an overheating issue, and under-clocking the GPU would help this problem.
