hello,

for the past 2-3 days ive noticed wierd stuff on my screen:
its as if i can see the pixels, but they are a different color, for example im looking at firefox, and the white part under the "g" for the google tab, is a faint purple streak of pixels.
is the screen failing? how can i troubleshoot this?
any suggestions?

thanks,
nick

It could be any number of things. The first thing to check is the cable. Is it firmly attached on both ends? Unplug it, look at the contacts so you can see any bent pints or corroded contacts. Or just try another cable.

If you are sure the cable is OK you need to isolate the problem between the monitor and the graphics card. Does it do the same thing with a different known good monitor at the same resolution? If the 2nd monitor looks OK then it is monitor related. There's probably not much you can do other than taking the case off blowing out the dust and generally just cleaning it up. If the 2nd monitor looks bad also then it's graphics card/chipset/RAM related. You might try PM'ing the machine. Just pull the cover and clean everything thoroughly. Also unseat and re-seat any add on cards and memory modules.

You didn't list any hardwware specs or age so it's impossible to go any further. Those general guidelines might help.
