Display laptop on Monitor

So my desktop gaming pc is getting some things done to it. So I have this really powerful laptop with an i-7 and gtx graphics card. I want to be able to hook up my laptop to my monitor so I can play while looking at the monitor instead of the laptop screen. So I hooked them up with a hdm and in display settings changed it to duplicate, but it is still just a black screen on the monitor. So then I thought maybe gpu isn't powerful enough for two monitors so then I set it to second screen only and still nothing showed up. Any suggestion on how to get this working? Thanks.

Go into device manager, update your graphics card and monitor/s

Check if all cables are securely connected to and from the monitor
