Display on Ext. Screen

I have an ASUS laptop that I added a 23" external screen to. Sometimes when I use the ext.screen it starts too far to the left of the border and I cannot see the first row of icons or the windows start icon. The display on the scree ends about 1" short of the right side. Everything is too far to the left and when I open programs they are also not displayed correctly. How can I get the 23" monitor to show the complete display.? This just started happening today. For the last six months it has been fine. I use WIN 7 OS.

did you change the resolution lately for the 23"?

also there are controls on the monitor that allow you to adjust the screen position
