Question display port 1.2 and 1.4 question

my 290 has a display port 1.2
the new monitor i bought has a display port 1.4

will they be compatible?

i heard the gpu most have the higher display port no? does it matter?

All DisplayPort devices and cables are compatible regardless of versions.

The connection will be limited to the capabilities of the lower version.
