Display Port Mini refresh rate issue

I just got a a new laptop ASUS 15.6'' N550JK-CN054D and got an external monitor for it as well ASUS Gaming VG278HE 27 inch. I was planning to make use of the high refresh rate on the monitor but I am only getting 60 Hz in Windows 8.1.

Connection made using the Display Port Mini from the laptop and the DVI in the monitor with an adapter between them. (Hama mini DisplayPort - DVI - HM53248)

From what I understood, even from some of the threads here, both the display port and the DVI offer 120Hz and only HDMI is limited to 60Hz (which I'm not using).

It shows the monitor as Generic PnP Monitor.

What am I missing?

*I believe you have a PASSIVE adapter. I read that passive DP->DVI adapters do not support Dual-Link DVI properly.

You probably need dual-link DVI to support the increased bandwidth that 120/144Hz requires. An active adapter would work but I'm not sure it's worth the cost.

I don't see any point going beyond 60Hz (60FPS) anyway since most games wouldn't go beyond that on your laptop without dropping the visual quality.

That's what I read about it as well. Why then does Windows only show me 59 and 60 Hz?

Again I mention that I am adapting from display port mini to DVI. Am not sure if it should be an issue provided that both separate connectors support 120 Hz.

I will try to get an active version. If that still does not work, I will simply replace my monitor with one that has DP, as I should have from the start.

Many thanks.
