I have recently purchased a Samsung Odyssey G9 and I want to connect it to my laptop as an external monitor.

However, my laptop has 1 HDMI output, and 1 thunderbolt 3 output. To my knowledge I need displayport 1.4 to achieve 5120x1440p @ 240Hz.

Is there any way I can use the ports on my laptop to get the 5120x1440p @ 240Hz, any adapters or cables.

I believe they make adapters.

That's a big monitor for a laptop to run - https://www.samsung.com/au/monitors/odyssey-g9-c49g95t/ 5120x1440

What make and model laptop have you got?

What GPU?
In an external graphics enclosure/power supply?

What HDMI version?

Can you run the monitor off a thunderbolt to displayport adapter?

Intel 8th Generation Core i7 - i7-8750H 2.2GHz
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6
16GB Memory
1TB Hard Drive + 128GB Solid State Drive
1 HDMI 2.0 Output
1 Thunderbolt 3 port
1 mini display port

I also have a displayport 1.4 cable and an HDMI 2.0 cable that came with the monitor.

HDMI2.0 will run resolutions up to 4K@50/60 (2160p)
DisplayPort 1.4 will run a resolution of 8K at 60Hz with 10-bit color HDR or 4K at 120Hz to be viewed.

Can you run the monitor off a thunderbolt to displayport adapter?

I don't think a RTX2060 (mobile especially) will run your monitor at anywhere near 240fps except for junior games.

You could try soemthing like these - https://www.laptopmag.com/au/articles/best-egpus

I can buy an adapter for thunderbolt to displayport and test it out. I don't play any games that push my GPU that far. Mostly fps games and nothing very taxing on the GPU. I just want to figure out what cables to use to get the best performance out of the monitor. My goal is to try and get 5120x1440p resolution with 240Hz all around, not just in games, since I also watch a lot of movies and want good quality.

Yeah I figured that. However to be honest my goal is just to find the best cable that will get me the best results. So do you think a mini displayport to displayport 1.4 cable will work with DSC and get me 1440p @ 240Hz? Or should I just stick to using something like an HDMI device to Display Port monitor cable adapter.

Yes, that I can deal with. As long as I can get the monitor to 240 Hz at 5120x1440p with a cable (I don't know which one yet) regardless of what my games will run at, I can make it work. My main reason for this post is to find a fully capable and best performing cable to use from my monitor to my display.
