Hi,

Hope all is well with you!

Okay. I have a gigabyte z77xud5h motherboard Now the Board itself on the back has a display Port. I also have a nvidia Video card Plugged into my 16x pcie slot running at 16x. My question is if I start using the onboard video instead of the graphics card video. What is the difference in performance between hdmi and a dispaly port. Would I see a difference in performance of any kind if I plugged my hdmi cable into my display port on the back of my motherboard and switched over to using the Onboard gpu or video that is built onto my motherboard.

Thank you so much!!

If you using a discrete graphics card, the integrated graphics is disabled normally, you won't be able to use the motherboard's display ports.
You can't plug a HDMI into Displayport unless you have an adapter. There is no point in plugging the monitor to the motherboard if you already have a gpu.

Well, what Kind of adapter? Also I took the hdmi cable out and did plug it into the display port and it fit So I'm assuming that since the hdmi cable fit into the display port that tells me that it fits and it does not need and adapter plug.
. So what would the differences be in performance or anything, between hdmi and display port.

Thanks Kinnyr90

So you mean you plug the HDMI cable into a HDMI port.
The GA-Z77X-UD5H has VGA, DVI-D, HDMI and Displayport.
HDMI and Displayport are different connectors. Both can carry video and audio but Displayport can also carry other data as well. Displayport also have a clip to prevent the cable from being pulled out.

Right it has a display port yes. And the display port can only be used with the onboard video. So I'm wondering what the benefit to me in terms of performance would I get if I were to unplugg the hdmi cable from the nvidia video card that I have and Plugg it into the display port on the motherboard and start using the onboard video by of course enabling it in the bios.

Thank you!!

The GA-Z77X-UD5H has VGA, DVI-D, HDMI and Displayport.. Those are your motherboard's display outputs (don't call them display ports, you will confuse it with the connector "Displayport".
HDMI and Displayport are different connectors. Both can carry video and audio but Displayport can also carry other data as well. Displayport also have a clip to prevent the cable from being pulled out.
You have been plugging in the HDMI cable into a HDMI port. You cannot plug in a HDMI cable into any other port.

You will be not using your graphic card if you're not plugging in the monitor into your gpu.

You can't plug a HDMI cable into displayport, they're different cables and it won't fit. The displayport connector is only slanted at one end, and has right angled bends in the inner socket... it will not accommodate a HDMI cable. If you've plugged a HDMI cable into a socket and it fitted... you've plugged it into HDMI, not displayport.

In regards to your original question, there are certain advantages of Displayport. You can run 4K@60 on the widespread Displayport 1.2. To get that resolution at HDMI you need the still relatively rare HDMI 2.0, or to drop colour space down. Displayport supports MST hubs which allow daisy chaining or running multiple displays from a single displayport. Displayport allows for AMD's Freesync.

But generally speaking, if you're running a relatively 'normal' monitor and setup, there's no advantage to displayport over HDMI. Both support 1080 @ 60, with audio if required, both will provide a lossless digital signal. Unless you specifically need on of the advanced features of displayport, stick with what you have.
