display port to hdmi not working

hey im trying to connect my dell monitor to laptop via an hdmi (laptop) to display port (monitor) cable, but getting no signal. if i connect hdmi to hdmi all is working but this new display port to hdmi cable no signal. why?

Most adapters only work in one direction. You need an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter, not a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Check the product description.
