Just a few days ago, my monitor display changed. On every line where there
is data, a gray colored background appears behind the data. The same gray
line continues all the way across the screen. Where there is no data, all is
normal. any pointers on what might be causing this? I tried switching
monitors, but still have the same problem.

Try F8 at startup and "Enable VGA Mode" Does it still happen? If so the
graphics adapter may have failed. If not then download and install the
correct driver from the manufacturer's web site.
