So I'm debating between getting a DP or HDMI cable. I read but it seem to me they both look the same. So I wanna know if it is or not. not a great deal of difference at the moment but as with all things hdmi is an older connector and displayport will be the norm in the future.

Without knowing your setup there is no way to know what would be better for you. They are not the same connection type.
