DisplayPort Vs. HDMI

I would like to know which cable medium will be best suited for the best quality graphics; a DisplayPort cable or an HDMI cable? What are the big differences that I should be aware of?

They're both digital so the image quality is the same for same settings. Both types have their ups and downs. DP supports higher refresh rates than HDMI 1.x, HDMI 2.0 on newer displays matches DP on that. There's generally no audio on DP monitor connectors, something to be wary of. Buying DP cables can also be a minefield, all cables are not equally compliant, as there is an issue with an old power connector on many displays. You'll basically be forced to buy "certified" cable brands, which obviously adds ten bucks to the price tag. Those cables doesn't connect that troublesome power pin.
Many displays (all with HDMI 1.x?) require a DP connection for adaptive sync like FreeSync.

For normal use they're both identical, it's just a matter of maximum limits. For 1080p 60 Hz, HDMI 1.4, HDMI 2.0, and DisplayPort are all capable of that, and all of them will be identical. For 4K 60 Hz, only HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 are capable of that, HDMI 1.4 isn't, so it can't be used for that, but the remaining two (DP and HDMI 2.0) will still be identical. Beyond that DisplayPort is the only option.

I've never used a monitor that supported audio over HDMI but not DisplayPort. DisplayPort audio is very well supported.

My LG monitor does not support DP audio, only HDMI audio. It's not really a problem for me as I don't plan on using the tinny display speakers.

Thank you all. I'm looking at an LG 32UD59-B 32" 4K and it looks like, from the specs online, it has HDMI 2.0 ports with HDCP 2.2 for both the two HDMI ports and the one DisplayPort (1.2 it says for that) so I'll probably just end up using an HDMI cable.

Though I just ordered an EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW2 and see that the LG 32UD59-B 32" 4K monitor I'm looking at has AMD FreeSync technology to help eliminate tearing with the refresh rate and and frame rate exchanges. I wanted to know if the video card I ordered will support it? Someone said if the card has "adaptive sync compatible output device" then the video card would support it.

FreeSync is only available when using an AMD card, since you have an NVIDIA card it will just act as a normal monitor.
