a freinds hd crashed, its a quantum at fireball.theysent him a new one ,and of course it was not preloaded as they had promised.n doing it himself he set the active partiton in a non dos partiton,I deleted this and then upon reboot the hard drive is not detected,is there a way to fix this?

I'm not sure if I understand your question properly, but trying to use a Win98 startup disk and go into FDISK to create the partition. Hope that helps a little.

go over your configuration again. unplug all your cables and check your jumpers. If it's the only drive make sure it is set to master. Sometimes the default is cable select and that could be the problem. Sometimes a cable might be loose or seated incorrectly and it just might not look that way.

Does your bios detect the drive properly?

If so, check all the settings and then try fdisk again. You can change physical disk with fdisk so check it cannot see the disk somewhere.

Otherwise try reseating all cables and check jumpers...

I need more details! It is possible that the drive is larger than the BIOS can detect automatically, or the BIOS was reset. You could need to set it to Auto and LBA. AT worst, you would have to set it to a smaller size and them use partition software to get the full size. But with the information you gave I can't even guesse if size is the issue!
