Hi people!.

I am currently a final year BSc Honours student studying Computer Networking. I have decided to do my topic on virtual private networks but don't know what to base the topic on. Whether its to do with the security protocol side of it or how it can be used within an organisation.

Do you guys know any good ideas for it? Much appreciated :)

Why don't you look at one of the newer issues. Most VPN used IPSEC or PPTP to establish a tunnel. Both have issues passing though a firewall even with the use of NAT-T support. The solution was SSL/TLS vpn tunnels. Since this appears to be HTTPS it will pass though anything firewall, proxy and since you can load a client via activex or java you can run it on machines without having to install software..you still must have admin for some things though. The key problem is that it uses TCP rather than a form of UDP which can greatly affect performance in installation where there is high latency. There have been a number of solution some using UDP again and other using wan accelerator software like options to avoid issue with tcp but none are really good.

You could do it on helping students with poor PC's. Suggest the uni purchase a VMware server like Citrix Xenserver or VMware which students can VPN on to from home. So when you students run resource intensive tasks on your PC (such as VM's - i use to run 3 vm workstations to practise with on my PC), the hardware power can come from the server at UNI as opposed to your laptop.

Then you can analyse the different types of VPN, such as SSL and IPSec Client VPNs (like Cisco client VPN) to identify the most secure method of accessing the uni network. If you want, you could just analyse the security of VPN and identify which is the most secure. Then you could analyse IPSec VPN's, SSL, PPTP, SSH VPN. You could then suggest things like further research that could be done is by going into one-time authentication techniques that could be done by sending a password via text to your mobile phone etc.

You can share your opinions and there's a lot of good projects available... you name it, it's there. I hope this information will help someone.
