Distorted display problem

When i update the the latest Nvidia graphics driver, i get a distorted rainbow display everywhere. From boot, at the desktop, in any menu or game, etc. The weird thing is, it only occurs on the native display of 1366x768. Any other resolution is free of this distortion, but other resolutions look terrible - stretched, less sharp, etc. The monitors menus are fine, the image i print screened looks of it looks normal when i go to a different resolution. Its just the native one. I've searched everywhere and no one has a problem that matches mine. I have pictures but im not too sure how to post them here.

Build:
Gtx 1080
I7 7700k
Msi z270 pc mate mb
2x8gb ddr4 ram
Nvidia graphics driver - 23.21.13.8800

Solution
Well without the nvidia drivers it stops detecting the gtx 1080 and backs down to a basic graphics card. At that point 1366x768 works perfectly, it displays how i want the gtx to display. But without the gtx, cant play many games, the basic one has no power.
I would uninstall the drivers with DDU and try installing again. If that doesn't work, just go back to the last driver that did work.

I just have to say this, you have a GTX 1080 and are using a 1366x768 monitor, wow talk about overkill....I hope you bought the 1080 with plans to upgrade to higher resolution one day?

Yea i've been holding out for a while now on the screen. When i tried device manager > display adapters > nvidia 1080, i did the rollback, and it seemed to give a less quality image then the other resolutions, but the distortion was gone. However, new problems arose. I had no access to internet, the option was gone in my bottom taskbar. When i went to internet settings, it showed a line similar to this. ------ - --- - ----- . The troubleshoot option underneath it did nothing when clicked. As well as the sound stopped working all together and could not detect my monitors speakers. I guess i'll keep trying with the drivers until i find something better

It sounds like the rollback has removed all the drivers for your motherboard, that's why I suggested DDU (all you had to do was google it) and it would only remove the display drivers. Install all your drivers again for the motherboard and it should come right.

Ok so i am in native and the distortion is gone so far. No sound/internet problems. Quality is good. Only thing is, Msi afterburner says my graphics card is the microsoft basic display adapter. I'll have to somehow find a driver that actually works. Thank you. Didnt know ddu existed. Better than that roll back.

Yes that is where i have been getting my drivers exactly. I assumed it was the latest driver that caused the distortion, but now it seems to be every/any nvidia driver. Is my gpu bad? Since it only distorts on the native resolution i thought it was driver based.

I don't really know why it would be doing that. I was thinking that maybe the drivers are for higher resolutions, but I did read that 1366x768 is supported. I doubt the problem is in the card, it could be your monitor and/or the cable that's connecting the two. What type of cable are you using and are you using any type of adaptor?

BTW, sorry for late replies, I'm fitting this in between rounds of my game :)

No adapters. Im using the cord it came with, a hdmi to the bigger port (with the screw in support, look up a picture of the gtx input) sorry i dont know the name of the other end of the cords name. The monitor is a smaller samsung lcd tv, but before, everthing was working on with my current setup, idk, is it possible a tv can go bad on only 1 resolution, and its native one at that?. No worries, im just glad you are able to help.

I assume the bigger plug you're talking about is a DVI connector, if so then it should all be good. If it was an older VGA plug, then that might explain the problem.....the gtx 1080 doesn't come with any VGA ports, but some older monitors and TVs do.

Just confirm you're using a DVI and not VGA.

Ok, so that's not the problem then. VGA is an analog format and the gtx 1080 doesn't support it, yet you can get HDMI to VGA, so that's why I wanted to rule it out.
I really don't know what's going on, only thing I can think of is to try a different monitor or TV. Do you have anything you could use, friends or family perhaps?

Ill have to test on another tv tomorrow its getting late. So far it only distorts on 1364x768 on nvidia drivers, so it doesn't make sense. I think i have a buggy setting or its a compatability/driver problem. But im not that technically inclined.

Without the Nvidia drivers you probably can't even get 1366x768, you need the drivers to get any kind of performance. See what another TV does.
