distortion at lower res

I have a 17" Sceptre DragonEye. It looks great @ 1024x768 but anything lower and the display is too small on the extrem left and right, and balloned in the middle. I have an ASUS GeForece2 MX. Anyone know what is wrong ?

I think you can fix those geometry problems by using the monitor's controls.

When I try to ajust the on screen menu, it says that it is already maxed in the direction I would want to turn it. Again, this does not happen at 1024x768, just lower.
