My order for the new system didn't go through. The best P4 board appears to be the GA-8IHXP, but limitted to around 150MHz FSB. Aopen makes a couple really solid i850E boards that support over 200MHz FSB, but lack certain features. The 648 chipset still doesn't appear to be fully developed, at least for the BIOS. RDRAM is still expensive...crap, I'll stick with what I have. Nobody seems to be interested in doubling the memory bandwidth of DDR any time soon, the dual channel 655 chipset is not even a whisper still, may have been dropped...

Bummer.
Dual channel DDR would really be great. Affordable high performance.

😎 I :smile: think :frown: I'm :redface: addicted :wink: to 😱 these 😡 ever 😱 so :tongue: cute 😎 smiley :lol: faces! :wink:

Ever heard of Granite Bay? Should be out in a little while now...

what is the best overclocking p4 board right now?....im not an expert on intel chipsets...the 850pe chipset seems to be the newest of them all or am I incorrect?...u guys are the experts fill me in =]...
I will be water cooling for the first time so im excited

thanks guys

No, the i845EP is their newest chipset, the "i850E" is their highest performance chipset. BTW, the i850E is exactly the same as the i850, they simply tested it at a higher frequency. So their best performer is actually 2 years old!

nice =]...thanks
does the 850e use ddr or rdram?....im wanting to go with ddr for the overclockablity....if so whats the best board to oc with that chipset

It uses RDRAM, which is more overclockable than DDR in spite of what Tom's writers said. For example Kingston PC1066 is rated at the PC1200 refresh rate of 32ns, a 15% overclock. Aopen makes boards with the high speed clock generator needed to run the i850E at bus clocks of over 200MHz, while others are limiting you to 150MHz, if that's what you refer to. But 150MHz would be a 50% overclock for a 400 bus proccessor.

DDR is good for overclocking on the cheap. You'll always have lesser performance than PC1066, fully overclocked DDR400 is almost as fast as stock speed PC1066, but nowhere near the speed of overclocked PC1066. Anyway, the Gigabyte GA-8SG667 seems to have the best performance of the DDR boards at bus speeds up to ~166MHz.

I have never tried to oc rambus before, but you know alot more about this stuff that I do =]. In that case I might just go for a board that uses rambus. What is the best ocing board that supports it? I will keep the last one you suggested in mind in case
thanks alot

The best overclockers come from Aopen. The best board otherwise is the Gigabyte GA-8IHXP. Aopen boards can overclock to around 248MHz bus clock, while the more feature-rich 8IHXP is limited to 150MHz.

I like the 8IHXP for several reasons, including the fact it uses the ICH4 southbridge with integrated USB 2.0 (I prefer on-chipset USB). It also has a good soundchip (possibly good enough for me to actually use), and a decent RAID controller. Allong with adjustable memory voltage, rare among RDRAM boards. The Aopen AX4T II-133 is the Aopen alternative, which I know too little about to recommend (maybe you would like to research that one).

thanks alot for the help crash, I will check into the ones you recommended...I looked at the ddr gigabyte board you talked about and really like its features and the fact it supports ddr400 =]....why doesnt this stupid thing have a clear cmos jumper?...strange
one more quick question...is usb2.0 quicker than ide hardrives?

USB 2.0 is something like 400 megaBITS/s, which is 50MB/s. Slower than the IDE channel, but faster than most drives.
