DivX and XVid to DVD, how successful?

These are good quality even when coimpresse to 700Mb, but will they
re-encode with an encoder suh as TMPGEnc back to mpg2 then to DVD?

I realise that the quality cannot be resurrected, but whats the genral
opinion?

Why not spend the <$90 for a DivX capable settop DVD
player? They had some at WalMart, but I was too late to
get one at the nearest store. I would make sure it can do:
MPEG4 AVC(H.264), as that looks to be the standard.

I've done it a couple of times using Ulead DVD Movie Factory.

It works, but you have to understand that it will never look as good as
the original footage did when it was compressed to mpeg-4, not if you're
putting an entire movie in a 700 MB file.

This is strictly a last resort...

Like others have suggested, DVD players that will do a nice job with
mpeg-4 are now under $100. Look in this week's US News and World Report
for a short article that mentions a few models.

I've never had any issues with converting. But i'm not a quality freak. I've
converted to mpeg1 and mpeg2 on dvd

I've have done it a few times using TMPGEnc but I have had some trouble
with a few xvid files. I usually convert only when I have divx or xvid tv
show or movie that I want to watch on my stand alone dvd player. I know
there are several players that will play divx videos (not sure about Xvid
though) but there have been mixed reviews on them especially with break ups
& video quality. I don't watch enough divx videos to justify buying a
dedicated player, however I was VERY impressed with the quality of the
converted xvid videos - especially considering the relatively small size of
the original files.

I want a DVD writer that can play all the popular formats as well. Does one
exist? How much do they sell for?

Yes. The strenght of mpeg-4 lies precisely in the very low bitrate
areas. But mpeg-1 or -2 cannot produce a good result in those same
areas.

By "play" you mean read? I don't know about "all formats" but
you can get a NEC ND2510A Double Layer capable 8X Dual(+&-)
DVD burner for ~$90. Check at www.newegg.com .

You need to me a lot more specific.

Are you talking about a *drive* that you would install in your PC? If so, then
yes.

Or are you talking about a "set top" writer that you would simply connect to
your TV set? If that's the case then probably not.

At any rate I think it's very hard to justify the expense of a dedicated
stand-alone set-top DVD writer if you already have a PC, since in some cases
the cost delta is about 8X cheaper by going the PC route. Then you can simply
buy an inexpensive set top *player* that supports mpeg-4, some of which have
already been suggested and use the extra several hundred dollars you saved on
software or blank disks or beer. Ummmmm, beer. ;->

Ok. I want a standalone, settop DVD writer that can play back DIVX encoded
discs, as well as all of the other major formats (MPEG4?), on my tv.

Good luck. I hope you have an extra $600-800 lying around.

Personally I think you're better off using your PC for the writing, and an
inexpensive *player* to hook to the TV, but hey, to each their own.

A WRITER? As in a set-top recorder that lets you record TV shows
like a VCR? I'm afraid that there are no DVD set-top recorders that
do that. There are PLAYERS that can do it, though. Go to
videohelp.com and check their DVD player reviews. Do a search for
ones that play back MPEG4. Aw, heck. Here's the link for you:

Player? Yes, eg. Philips DVP642 at Walmart and Amazon.com for <$69
that'll play DVD/DIVX/XVID/MPEG-4/MP3/JPEG CD/CD discs.
