I'm somewhat interested in these but the only review for the sound quality and build comes from the devs themselves about it being equal to $500+ headphones and uh... I'm not trusting that.

He is using quality drivers for the ears. They are typically $25-$40/driver x 2. Considering the kit isn't that much over $100 US that's not that bad.
