DIY Wooden sata to usb dock

So im planning to enlist my woodworking experience to make a 3.5" & 2.5" hdd dock.im looking for an adapter (sata obviously) to usb 3.now here is the catch: some circuits just use a usb plug.others employ a dc input as well.what should i choose?i primarily want it to work as a hotswap dock for examining drives and for making backups quickly.
