DL maps from server - speed

When I'm connecting to a server running a map I do not have on my HD, the
download speed is terribly slow (like 2 KB/s) -- even when the server is on
my LAN and no one is connected through internet. It's radically faster to
exit Q3A, copy the map file from the server to the computer that needs it
and then restart Q3A and reconnect to the server.

Is there a server setting that determines the maximum DL speed, and can it
be increased?

Sadly there is no specific setting to alter this. Download speed is
related to whatever sv_maxrate is set to. Even if this is set very high,
download speeds aren't much quicker, even on a LAN.

The download speed is limited for good reason, if clients start
downloading maps at full speed then they're going to lag out anyone who is
playing on your server. Enemy Territory has got the right idea, if a
client hasn't got a map it can redirect them to an FTP where the map will
download at full speed without them having to exit the game.
