If I use my vpn client on my home pc and i can see my works network, I cannot resolve by name and I must use IP addresses. Is there a way to resolve by name on a pc that is outside the building and not on the domain?

I still need to test this as the question just came up today (im not a network guy) but if i take a laptop that is on the domain home, will it resolve by name since it is a part of the domain?

I don't think I understand your question.

Your office has a DNS server(oN the Domain). Your internet at home also has a DNS server(to get to places). If you change your DNS (in your network properties) to the DNS at the Office when you have your VPN connected, then you should see the systems on your domain.

ok, i see the systems. like lets say there is a webpage at ip 111.111.111.111 and its name is google.com. when i am at home and connect to the network, on my home pc, i cant connect to google.com but i can connect to 111.111.111.111 i cannot resolve webpages or map network drives via name, i must use ip addresses. i would like to know if it is possible to do it via name. i havent even googled yet, just thought i would ask the forum so i can get an answer to my exact question

This is a security issue. Many VPN clients do this so you can't browse the internet through your(home) internet connection. If you change your dns(maybe add a secondary) to your works DNS you should be able to connect through your work's DNS and network to get out to the internet.

i still dont think you are understanding the question.

when at work, my homepage is "myworksintranetpage" which has an ip of 1.1.1.1

when i am at home, i enter my credentials to get access to my works network. however, i cannot load the page "myworksintranepage". it never resolves by name. but if i type the IP of 1.1.1.1 in my browser, i can see it.
