Every time this happens, I get a warning in the Event Viewer that says:

Name resolution for the name dns.google timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Client PID 18780.

It shows up as a different domain each time. I've tried a lot of things software-wise, and I'm convinced it's something to do with hardware. Not sure what to do here.

OS: Windows 11

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Include PSU: make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, refurbished, used)?

Disk drive(s): make, model, capacity, how full?

List of all connected peripherals.

Make and model information for modem, router, or modem/router if combined.

= = = =

Also look in Reliability History/Monitor - much more end user-friendly and the timeline format may reveal some pattern.

On the system in question run "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) via the Command Prompt and post the full results.

You should be able to copy and paste the results without needing to retype everything.

PSU: I don't trust myself opening the case, nor do I know where the PSU is. But it's quite old and hasn't been replaced since I first got the PC (a few years ago.)

Disk drive(s): CT1000BX500SSD1 (SSD) and KINGSTON SNVS1000G (SSD). Both are almost completely full.

Peripherals (just gonna copy and paste from Speccy here):

I'm not entirely comfortable posting my ipconfig /all into here.

It's wifi disconnect causes dns errors, not the other way.

Your wifi adapter and router info?

ipconfig /all info will NOT put you in any risk, no one is able to use those info to attack you.

Based on the error message you stated this could just be a DNS issue. Try changing your DNS settings to one of the public DNS servers: Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 or Google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Already tried that and it hasn't worked.

If you say so.

Your router model? And see if you can let the router choose channels automatically
and how far are you from the router?
I'm a floor up from the router. My router is from BT, unsure what the model is. I have full-fibre connection.

I disabled automatically choosing channels.

Get a better usb or pcie wifi adapter with longer antennas and extension cable with a base that can sit on the table.
I'll see how much they are and order one if I can, then get back to you. For now, I'm open to trying to solve it software-wise.

That is windows being stupid. Of course you can't get to the DNS server when the wifi is down, you can't get to any server. It is kinda like someone saying the internet is down when the power goes off in their house.

Wifi is a massive pain to troubleshoot. There is little way to tell if for example the connection got too many errors and was reset or there was some other issue that caused the connection to be disconnected. It can be software but most times it is poor signal level and interference.

So as others have mentioned this appears to be a USB wifi nic......the ipconfig you provided shows a wifi chipset that uses USB. You stated though that you have a wifi nic card.

Do you have 2 wifi nic cards connected to the machine.

The simple thing to try first is to uplug the USB nic card from the machine and use a USB extension cable to move the wifi device away from the PC. The back of a computer case has lots of metal and blocks wifi signals. If this really is a internal nic card then you can't use this trick.
