Hi, I'm hoping you can help me, I've been stuck at this for hours, and need some expert advice.
Please note: I am in no way an advanced computer user and will need clear explanations/instructions.

I have Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and have a DELL desktop computer.

I have connected to internet via ethernet cable -called local area connection 2, and have internet access. therefore the error shouldnt be due to trying to connect via wifi.
however i cannot access the internet on any browsers or have any webpage work. havng the ‘DNS Probe Finished No Internet’ error.

I also tried installing the firefox browser to check whether it was only a problem with chrome or not by downloading it onto a usb drive from another computer and then trying to install it on the fautly computer. this wouldnt install saying theres no internet connection or something like that- BUT I KNOW THAT I HAVE CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER! its so frustrating.

Also pls note: all other devices in the house inc smartphones , tablets and this laptop i am using right now are wirelessly connected to the router via wifi....and they all work fine with no problems... so all other devices apart from the dell computer work.

Oh and i dont know whether this may be helpful or not but in the status of the Local Area Connection 2 it says 'IPv4 connectivity: Internet' AND 'IPv6 Connectivity: no internet access'...i dont know if the IPv6 no internet access might contribute to the error or not.

please help me, and if there is any other info you need please ask...i am desperate here.
thanks

open command prompt, run the following command, and post the output here.

p.s: i have no idea why why the smiley faces are there...i think the characters converted to a smiley im not sure
I've just double checked the cmd text and where the smiley faces are there should be a ' : d ' (colon followed by a lowercase d with NO SPACES between them) .

Oh and ive also booted the computer into safe mode with networking and the problem still persists (if thats any help)

It looks like it should work. Try a nslookup command from the command line for some site like tomshardware.com. This should show if you are using the dns correctly.....it will also show if it is attempting to use IPv6. You can go into the network setting and safely uncheck the IPv6 box if you want it still after all these years has few sites that use it. Unchecking the box will get rid of the strange looking but valid ipv6 addresses.

i don't see any issues with your ipconfig

try opening 192.168.1.1 in a web browser and let me know what happens.

try resetting internet explorer to factory defaults (tools -> internet options -> advanced tab -> reset

also go ahead and run the following 3 commands and restart the computer

ipconfig /flushdns
arp -d *
netsh int ip reset

Ok, so when I try opening 192.168.1.1 in a web browser, webpage is not available comes up with the message ERR_FAILED underneath.
I tried this on my laptop and it works, with the webpage TALKTALK coming up showing my router details ect.

Also I failed to mention before that my internet explorer wont load. It opens and then freezes/crashes immediately, and then closes straight away.
This also happens in safe mode- you see, I dont have any working browsers!
I have tried to disable and then enable IE to see if it'll work but still crashes.
I have also tried to reset Google Chrome to factory defaults however, but thats been no help either.

Ok, when i entered all 3 commands it showed that they had been done successfully, and then restarted the computer. but it still doesn't work.

can I also add that after i log on, a small window appears titled SPUpdate.exe
this shows the message that 'an error appeared in the application'.
then it has a few tabs at the side that say either continue application, restart application, close application, or send, save or show bug report.
This SPUpdate.exe window appears all the time, and from what I recall has been popping up since tings started to go wrong.
maybe thats contributing to the problem :/
hope thats any help

sorry but i dont know how to do a nslookup for a site. I've tried to google how to do it but i dont know how.
should i still uncheck ipv6 without doing the nslookup?

You just type nslookup www.tomshardware.com on a cmd line.

When you have trouble opening the web page to your router using the IP address it means you have a much more serious issue than DNS. When you use IP addresses you do not even use DNS.

Try to ping 192.168.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 from the command line. If this works it means at least you have some basic connectivity.

At this point I would try a good malware scanner. It could also be firewall rules blocking you. The SPUpdate is a dell thing but everything I see this indicates some files got damaged which could again be malware.

ok, heres what cmd showed:

i ran malwarebytes yesterday which showed no malware, however when i tried opening it again it wont open due to some run time error or something.
I also switched off my firewall and uninstalled my antivirus, as i read online somewhere that they could be blocking something. but still doesnt work

This shows you can contact a DNS server and get valid results back....you can ignore the first one that is just IPv6 not working which would be expected.

This means you have the basic internet abilities and DNS works fine even though the browser said it did not.

These issues are extremely hard to find. It appears you have nothing actually wrong with your network connectivity. It would be nice if there was a simple command line to test web traffic like you do with nslookup for dns.

I would make a backup of your disk just in case you have a serious issue like a hard drive failure damaging files.

From a quick dig on the SPUpdate thing it is something related to "surfing protection". If that is broken it very well could be blocking your browsers.

ok, so the error is difficult to figure out...what a shame :??:
anyway, heres the SPUpdate.exe bug report that always pops up, i couldnt understand it so have no idea if its something related to surfing protection...maybe it'll give you some clue as to whats going on.

if there is absolutely no answer to what could be the problem, then would you advise about doing a factory restore or something like that??
I purchased the computer off a website that sold refurbished computers so i dont have any recovery CD or anything, but maybe i could buy that from dell or something. I guess its the last resort right??
the thing is i cant afford to buy another brand new computer /laptop or even another refurbished one t o be honest. so would a restore of the computer and a reinstall of windows 7, or even windows 8 be okay to do?

ive tried those commands...no luck.
i already had ccleaner , and cleaned all the temp files/registry errors many times. that didn't help either.

no updates will download on the computer so i assume i wont be able to get windows 10 to download either, because i also downloaded win10 onto my other laptop for which i needed internet to be working properly. am i right?
is there a way to download/install windows 10 any other way? like put it onto a usb stick or something?

Yup you can get a boot image. It can be directly installed...but I would try to run it as a upgrade, you boot your laptop into win 7 and then run the start thing as a program on the usb/dvd.

Mostly this is so it will try to keep the drivers from the win7 install. It also tends to figure out the upgrade stuff better so you don't get into licensing issues. The good thing is even if it does not work and you have to actually boot the USB and have to new install if you let it upgrade once you can skip the codes and it figures out the code.

okay, so sorry to bother you with so much questions but i dont fully understand this.

what is a boot image/how can i get a boot image? as in how can i directly install it?
do i run it as an upgrade after getting/installing a boot image? is this by booting the computer into win 7 and then run the start thing as a program on the usb/dvd (as you mentioned above)?
can it be upgraded after its been installed as a boot image without any internet connections?
are you saying it's better to run it as an upgrade than a boot image? yes?

sorry again for so much questions which probably seem really straightforward, but i want to be properly sure.

There is a file they call ISO on the microsoft site. You just download and either burn it to a cd or write it to a USB using a special program.

Hopefully in the process of upgrading it will regain the ability to get to the internet and be able to correctly register with microsoft so you get a authentic operating system.

Microsoft has not said a lot how they do this I suspect to prevent hackers but it seems to be able to convert a older windows registration to a new windows 10 and then it still knows even if you reinstall the OS and do not key in any code.

The only time you have a issue is if you directly install the win10 as though the machine were blank the very first time you put win10 in. You do not have a code to put in and if you tell it to skip it will install but you will get constant nag messages it is not authenticated.

What is strange is if you have ever done the upgrade before...or keyed in a win10 code the first time... you can skip the code and it just figures it out. There must be a way for microsoft to take some unique identifier from your hardware so it can find this even if you were to lose all the software like you do when you replace a harddrive.

Thanks for that thorough explanation, all your help has been very much appreciated. I'll try this sometime later this week and see how it goes.

hi hira

in dos prompt (i mean in c:\) type "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" then enter

then in c:\ type "netsh winsock reset" then hit enter

remember restart your computer

done.

hi, is dos prompt same as command prompt?
because i have entered that command (netsh winsock reset) in command prompt and after hitting enter it said 'successfully reset the winsock catalogue'. after that i restarted the computer.
however the DNS Probe Finished No Internet error still remains.

I've also tried everything on this page : http://www.pcappspot.com/fix-dns-probe-finished-no-internet-error-fixed/
this didnt help either.
I just dont know what to do. it seems like ive tried everything.

is there anything else you could suggest. i really dont want to have to resort to any drastic measures like uninstalling the whole windows 7 system or updating to windows 10.
