Do 10 bit and HDR display mean the same thing?

I'm planning to get into 4K gaming but I'm confused with these terms, HDR and 10 bit display. I did a little google search and from my understanding 10 bit display equals HDR. Is this true or are they different? What about a 10bit display that is 8 bit+A-FRC?

HDR and bit rate are linked, but they're not exactly the same.

HDR is a process whereby three identical images of varying brightness are placed on top of one another to make the overall image more striking. Bit rate refers to the amount of colours a device can produce; the higher the bit rate, the more colours.

HDR uses 10-bit colour to produce its image, hence why the two are linked and easily misrepresented.

I see. So am I correct if I say that if a display is HDR, it must also be 10 bit but a 10 bit display is not necessarily a HDR one? If I am, are the difference huge though between a 10 bit HDR display and a 10 bit non HDR display?

If it is hdr10 or equivalent standard. There are many tvs and displays labeled as hdr but are no different than a normal display. You can look up the hdr10 specs and see what else makes it compliant with the standard. There are other things like being 4k that may not be relevant but it also covers contrast and brightness. Also 10 bit does not guarantee the display can take advantage of a wider color gamut. So a 10 bit display may not be hdr10 and can have big differences. I've seen some crap displays with bogus marketing.

Looking from the prices of HDR10 4K display, they certainly cost more than I would ever be willing to spend on a monitor. There also seem to be not that much of 4K HDR10 display. Will I miss a lot if I just get a normal 4K monitor like say, LG 27UD68-W? I mainly use my PC for gaming and painting.

Hdr10 is still rather new which also means there's not much content compatible with it either so you don't miss out on much. That lg is a great 4k monitor for the price.
