I plan soon to upgrade my gtx 960 to two RX 580's and put them in crossfire but do they require some sort of bridge like Nvidia SLI or is it just done in a program. Or should I just wait for Radeon RX Vega 56 to come out.

Solution

no. AMD crossfire no longer using bridge for several generation. but as TJ Hooker said better get faster single GPU rather than doing multi GPU if you can. going forward (starting from Vega series) AMD will focus less on multi GPU system.

Modern AMD cards do not require a bridge for crossfire. RX Vega is due out this year.

@OP it's generally recommended to buy the single best card you can rather than xfire/SLI.
