I don't have a lot of money but I need to upgrade to a different system. I plan on buying parts one at a time and I am not sure how long it will take. Do Computer parts that have not been opened and taken out of the box have a shelf life, or can I keep them for as long as I need to get all of my parts?

Solution
They dont really have a shelf life, but I agree that you should not be buying the system in chunks. New products come out, performance gets better, and prices drop with time.
A better option is to buy yourself a nice, closed container. Any time youre ready to buy a component put that cash into the box. Once you have enough put away for the system, buy the system. You have nothing to gain from buying in parts.

Solution
Electronic parts do not have a "shelf life" per se. However, their warranty starts running from date of purchase, not date of first use. Building a PC your way will result in a machine where some parts have a warranty, and others do not, which become an issue if one of the parts without a warranty is defective, and you don't find out about it until AFTER you complete your build. Now you have to re-buy the defective component instead of replacing it under warranty.
