Hello I am looking to buy a good laptop with low/bad processor and replace the processor with a core i7 4700mq or a good i7 processor but when I search Google for the socket of the 4700mq the only processor that comes up is that one.

So my question is can a processor only fit into one specific socket?

Ps. I am talking about in laptops that the processor can actually be changed in.

Thanks.

Each processor family or series has its own socket, some are cross compatible, especially with AMD, but many are not, and they are made that way for a reason. There is more to it than just the socket though.

I know most laptops cant be changed but I'm talking about barebones laptops.

How come on the custom laptop sites like xoticpc.com are there different choices of processors for the one laptop if the sockets for each processor are so specific?
