If your display has a VGA connection, and the PC/laptop is DVI connection, you should use a DVI-I (DVI-A) to VGA cable or adapter. ... DVI-I to VGA effectively works as a standard analogue VGA connection bypassing the digital element meaning the connection is more like DVI-A to VGA.

For the cheap Converters:
The source DVI must be DVI-A or DVI-I
The -A means its an Analog DVI signal
The -I means it contains both, Analog and Digital signals.

VGA is purely Analog

otherwise you will need an "Active DVI to VGA" converter which will convert the digital signal to analog.

I tried it once. First i tried a hdmi to vga converter. it worked fine, but after a while my monitor would turn off and on again every 10 seconds, so i returned it and got a dvi to vga converter. Same thing until it fried my monitor
