Do GPUs only work on certain motherboards?

I already know this is probably a really stupid question to ask, but are some GPU's not compatible with some motherboards, or do all GPU's fit all motherboards?

GPU I am planning on getting: EVGA 03G-P4-2884-KR GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5

Motherboard I am planning on getting: ASUS Z170 Deluxe LGA1151

its not a stupid question--if you dont know something then asking is anything but stupid

yes over all some wont work with others--but that would apply to mixing old stuff with new stuff--ie agp board and pci-e card or vice versa

if its a modern board and card then its all pci-e so basically any card will work in any board

Yes, and any relatively recent graphics card, every single PCIE model like after 2010 will work with the Z170 Deluxe.

yep--and looks like a nice board that asus i struggled between getting that and the asrock oc formula for ages before deciding to try asrock for a change

cant go wrong with either board

the 3 m2 slots finally swung it to asrock

i am pretty convinced m2 drives will be replacing 2.5 ssds and as the price of m2 drives keeps dropping it means i can in the future get 2 more without needing pci-e adapter cards for them

ASRock is very good, and that black/yellow will look superb if you use the right components. I think Corsair 400C will be the right case for it, as you'd be ''simulating'' Corsair's black/yellow theme color if that makes any sense at all, for example this product page (I think it looks nice):
