Hi, I want to upgrade my current system which is five years old. The one question I would like input on is the motherboard.

I currently have an Asus P8-Z77-V Pro MB (yeah, old I know). I like Asus MBs bc they have served me well, and I love how well this current one overclocked my K-series CPU.

I want a new MB that can overclock the CPU to at least 4.5Ghz. I think I’m going to go with an Intel 8th generation CPU.

If I want that kind of power and speed do I need to spend more and buy an Asus Gaming MB like the Maximus Hero or ROG Strix Z390-F, or some MB that is over $200, when I very rarely play a game like Assassin Creed or Wolfenstein, but I still want maximum speed? I do need a reasonable amount of power bc I use graphic intensive programs like Photoshop. Moreover, I also want to be able to transfer data between drives as fast as possible.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

I use graphic intensive programs like Photoshop.
That's just one app...you mentioned graphic intensive programs

In all honesty, your choice of motherboard will depend on the processor you're looking for and the sort of task that you will laden the system with. Speaking of which, what is your proposed build looking like?

The new nomenclature from Asus has reorganized the meaning of Gaming in their hierarchy and it's now a known adage that the Gaming moniker means it's a cheap board. Asus's top tier boards are found in the ROG Maximus lineup and not the Strix or lower tiers.

Hi, thanks 4 answering my post. You wanted to know my proposed build info, I will list it believe.

Right now, financially, I could pull off replacing the MB, CPU, and DDR4 RAM (2x8GB) in most configurations. However, I do like Asus MBs bc they have worked well for me in the past, though I’m reluctant to go over the $200 tag bc I’m not a gamer, so I’m wondering if it makes sense? I have three games on my system, mentioned in initial post, but I haven’t played with any of them in over a year, so I think should buy as if I don’t need to think about high-end games.

I mistakenly wrote that “I use graphic intensive programs.” The only program that fits that bill is Photoshop. Nevertheless, I would like a speedy system.

Asus MB (?) (Like 2 Keep Under $200)
CPU: Intel i5 9600K @ Up to 4.6Ghz or the Intel i5 8600k @ 4.3Ghz
Corsair Vengeance LED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200Mhz, and would likely add more if it will result in a decent increase in processing speed.

Corsair H100i Extreme Liquid CPU Cooler *
Gigabyte GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI 4GB GDDR5 Graphic Card*
Samsung SSD EVO 860 @ 500GB*
WD BLUE HDD 4TB @ 5400*
Corsair 600T Computer Case*
Corsair ML120 Magnetic Levitation Fan*
Corsair SP 120 High Static Pressure Fan (2)*
Corsair AF 120 Quiet Edition Fan (2)*
AeroCool 200mm Silent Master Fan*
Any component w an asterisk (*) is from my current build.

Input welcome. Hi Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I should have written that I am interested in a desktop configuration and not one for a laptop.

I will try and find some info on how Asus motherboards have changed for Intel 9 chipset and see if I can learn anything that way.

Anyone else having something to share about MBs that might work for me? I think I want to purchase another Asus MB. I really like how easy it is to Extreme overclock your board w Asus. If other MB companies have a similar set up for overclocking, where u can push your CPU hard w/o having to personally adjust voltage settings, etc., then perhaps someone smarter than me might know a MB that would work well for me?
