It wouldn't matter. They are both the same, the only difference that HDMI 2.0 being capable of outputting 4K resolution at 50-60 frames/second. HDMI 1.4 had the bandwidth to output 4K, but at only 24 frames/second.

I presume you wouldn't even need 4K resolution on a generic laptop.

thanks, i plan on using/buying an external display and i wanted to know if i should go 4k or 2k

no need to stress it ,its a work laptop ,2k on a bigger screen should be fine (dell u2515h).
