Do I have the right cable for the video card?

Hello.

I just bought a ATI HD4850 (Gainward), which apparently only uses DVI-I ports. I use an old Samsung SyncMaster 957DF CRT monitor, which uses a VGA or SVGA cable (I'm not sure), so I bought a VGA to DVI-I adapter.

The connector to my video card looks like this: http://data.macoteket.se/images/other_images/DVI_I_kontakt.jpg

I however, have apparently gotten a hold of this (notice middle connector, which should look like the above linked image, looks different): http://site.stsi.biz/images/dvi-a-dvim-15f.jpg

As stated, I'm not sure if it's a VGA or an SVGA monitor. I have bought a VGA to DVI adapter, will I be able to use it even if it turns out to be an SVGA monitor?

I'm fully aware I could check it myself, but I'm not at my computer until tomorrow evening, and if it turns out it doesn't fit, it's a three hour ride to get a replacement, and I want to sit down and start installing the OS right away, as its my first build :).

This should work fine. Cables and connectors for VGA and SVGA are the same. The difference is entirely in the electrical signals on the wires. SVGA simply can do higher resolutions and screen refresh frequencies.

The adapter you got looks OK. All I see is that it does not bother with pins for signals it does not use.

Check the web (Samsung website?) for an up-to-date driver for your monitor and your OS. This can be useful to simplify setting your video output to the best capabilities of your monitor.

Thank you. I hope you are right! It seems to fit at least.
