Hi guys,

Should i seriously consider buying a CPU cooler for my Intel i5 4460 CPU or would the stock cooler be enough?

Also, considering I'm not overclocking my CPU can you recommend me a budget cooler if I'm going to need one

I appreciate your help guys :)

Solution
It depends on what is defined as intense gaming. If you're going to be playing WOW, Farcry 4, Battlefield 4, no. If you're going to be playing these while recording videos, most likely. If you're going to be playing games and running servers for them in the background with a potential for background recording, yes. The socket type determines whether or not the CPU cooler will fit, the cooler master supports the 1150.

In most situations the stock cooler is more than enough, but in intense loads it wasn't designed to keep it from overheating under load. It's also worth mentioning that while it cannot be known how much it will affect the longevity, it will decrease the lifespan of both the motherboard and the CPU by having it run at...

Unless your case has terrible airflow, for some reason, or the weather is insanely hot you should be fine using the stock cooler :).

You do not need anything more than a stock cooler if you're not going to be doing any overclocking. For basic gaming and so forth it should be fine. It only has an 84W TDP. Your CPU will run considerably hotter than an aftermarket but it shouldn't be a concern. If you're going to be doing video editing (Where builds can take up to hours and require the full power of the CPU), I would recommend going with a basic aftermarket CPU cooler such as Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, as the stock cooler to my previous knowledge has been known to allow the CPU to overheat under heavy loads as it cannot keep up with demand.

Would I need a CPU cooler for intense gaming?

Also would the cooler your recommended fit on a
Gigabyte H81M-S2H Motherboard (Intel H81 Express, DDR3, SATA 600, Micro ATX, USB 3.0, Socket 1150,) ?

Thanks for your answer!
Yes, I shall be playing intense games like the ones you mentioned above.
Is it possible you can recommend me a budget CPU cooler for around £10-£15 please, just to solely be on the safe side?

Budget coolers are hard to come by, the best design is the heatpipe design to the fins. Unfortunately not a lot exist at a low price point, and the ones that do exist are smaller. For example:

http://www.newegg.com/global/uk/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134
This one is a 92mm fan size. Better than the stock and probably by enough.

http://www.newegg.com/global/uk/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835856006&cm_re=120mm_cpu_cooler-_-35-856-006-_-Product
This one is a 120mm fan. Probably best, but £20.17.

Where are you located?
