Do I need a good motherboard?

I am not going to lie, I never really cared much about motherboards. However, planning to build a new pc, I wonder how much to spend on a board. The system I have in mind consists of an I7 4790k, a 980ti, 16GB of RAM, and possibly a solid-state drive. Now, would I benefit from a more expensive motherboard (for exmaple from the Z97 Gaming family) or should I just go ahead and buy a cheap one like the ASRock H81M-HDS?

Thanks for the help

If your not going to overclock purchase the non k processor. I would still get a solid z97 motherboard as the GPU may rely on it. But if you want to overclock feel free to purchase the k version.
I recommend the MSI Z97 GAMING 3, 5, 7 or 9 series motherboard. (I use the gaming 3)
Hope this helps :)
I would not skimp on the motherboard.
Since you have a K series processor listed, I would get a solid Z97 motherboard. They have some extra features over the h81 boards, they also support SLI and overclocking. Do you have a budget for the motherboard?

Since you are getting a K series then I assume you want to overclock. An h81 motherboard, while it can do some overclocking, lacks the higher end VRMs and heat shielding to enable it to do a higher more stable overclock. To try to overclock an i7 with an h81 motherboard is just a waste of money buying the K series.

Now you don't need to go out and buy the Hero or any other $200 motherboard.

I would suggest a GIGABYTE GAMING 5 or ASUS Z97 A board for your needs.

The gaming boards have better audio, more slots, gaming enhanced nic cards and other features that will be nice to have.

So it's only about overclocking? Beause I didn't really have that in mind when picking the cpu. I only chose the I7 4790k due to its similar price.
