Do I need a massive fan?

Getting an E6600 tomorrow. I would like to overclock it to 3.0GHz on an ABit AW9D and have been recommended various aftermarket coolers, such as scythe infinity and zalman 9500/9700, etc. Do I really need one of these extreme coolers? For a start I really dislike the look of them, they are very big ugly things (especially the Scythes). Secondly I don't want the blue LEDs many of them seem to be equipped with. And finally I will be using an Antec 900 case, which should keep everything pretty cool no?

Your thoughts would be appreciated (before I order my stuff tomorrow afternoon if possible!).

The purpose of this new generation of heat-pipe coolers is too handle large amounts of heat output, but more-so to allow this without screaming 92/80mm fans. People are tired of having whining systems. You won't really need that much better cooling than stock, to reach 3GHz with an E6600. A stock cooler will suffice, but temps will start to elevate a little. If you're concerned about this, just stick with the stock HS/F, and the if temps start to climb, then buy an aftermarket HS/F. GL :)

Ugly big coolers are not the point, it's cooling performance is. I'm sure it will fit on your case and motherboard. If you want the best then there's Tuniq Tower 120, Thermalright Ultra-120 and Scythe Infinity, currently among the best air coolers. You can upgrade the fans with FM121 for better airflow and silence. This should handle the cpu on overclocking really well, for the cooler the cpu that stable it is during overclock. Use Artic Silver 5 thermal paste also.

Thanks for the advice..... all the scythes are out of stock in my local store apart from Samurai Z and they don't sell Tuniq/thermalright (I'm in UK). The only decent looking ones they sell are the Noctua NH-U9 (no fan, should I add one, and how?), a range of NorthQ UFOs and Zalmans, Arctic Freezer Pro 7 and Silverstone Nitrogon NT01 through NT05. Would you recommend any of these?

Freezer Pro 7 is a good one, and cheap too.

Will the pre-applied MX-1 paste be adequate, or is arctic silver 5 a must?
AS5 has lost ground to stuff like ASCeramique and Zalman's paste (the only thing where they nailed it).
As long as youre >75c and >1.45vCORE youll be fine on stock cooling.
