As the title says, the display only works when i have the hdmi plugged into the motherboard on the back of the pc, black screen in the gpu. This was sudden and happened after turning my pc back on after it went to sleep, no new hardware was put in or updates occured to trigger this.

After booting with the hdmi in the motherboard and having the display work, i moved it back to the gpu and it worked again but not for long, now it doesnt seem to be working plugged into gpu at all. Gpu is not showing up in device manager, does this mean my gpu is fried and need a new one?

Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M
CPU processor: intel core i7 2600k 4 cores
ram: 16gb
system: windows 10 64 bit
graphics card: AMD radeon HD 7970

Solution
I think that the symptoms you are seeing are pointing to the GPU as the problem.
If you can get another one to swap in....that would somewhat confirm it.
...or try yours in another machine.

Ok thanks I'll give that a go when i can. So if it is the GPU, can GPU's be fixed or do I just need to buy a whole new one?
