Hello everyone, about a year ago I bought a PC with an i3 7100 and a gtx 1050 ti, and now I want to upgrade to an i5 8400. Since they're the same socket I'm just wondering do I need to buy an entirely new mobo?
They're not the same socket, the 7th gen is the 1151 and the 8th gen is the 1151 (300). You would need a new mobo. I would save your money and get a i5 7500 or i7 7700 and then put the money to a new graphics card.

Thank you for the quick reply, and while I can afford an i5 7500 the mobo might be just another 80 dollars or so, and I don't have a problem with buying it, my only concern is I don't know if it will fit lol. I think the motherboard is nothing special but I don't know which size would be best. Again thank you.
