Question Do I need a soundcard?

Hi! I'm new here, sorry if I'm forgetting things :)

I have an msi mpg z490 gaming plus motherboard which unfortunately no longer produces sound (other than a single hum without sound from the pc), so I use the graphic card or micro sound output.
The problem is that there is a big, big background noise on my speakers and my headphones (the speakers are the yamaha dbr12 and the hpf does not change anything).
I'm thinking of buying the astro a50 headphones, and would like to avoid the same problem.

so here is my question: would a sound card solve these problems? I saw the Asus Xonar SE which corresponds to my budget, would it be useful?

Thanks :)

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Have you tried making sure that the BIOS for the motherboard is updated? Following that, have you checked to see if the OS is updated? Following that, did you manually uninstall and reinstall your audio drivers in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator?

Have you checked to see if the audio cable that should go into the audio output port is fully inserted?

Thank you for your fast answer!

the cables are properly connected, my os is up to date but my bios is not, i will do that now. when the audio stopped working i tried many things (including audio drivers) but nothing worked, and my motherboard warranty expired. that's why I turn to the sound card option

hi

I don't know if there is a way to post audio on the forum so here is a youtube link
View: https://youtu.be/KKoKPFLjE78

first the speaker is connected, then the loud noise comes when my graphics card is used (I used a msi kombustor benchmark here), and finally I unplugged the jack cable and the noise stopped.

the noise does not change when I turn my sound down to 0, but it does change when I turn up the sound on the speaker

I did not specify it but the graphics card is a 3080 oc from gigabyte

I'm not the only one using this pc, and someone would need to use the optical audio output (which would also suit me if I buy the a50). as the audio from my motherboard does not work I imagine that the optical output either, I would probably end up buying this sound card. I looked at your link, if it is a ground loop it would affect the whole pc? if so the sound card would have the same problem then?

thanks for your patience and help :)

The Astro A50’s have a base station that connects to the pc by USB, this base station is its own soundcard and they won’t be using any other soundcard in the pc. Therefore adding a soundcard to the system won’t have any effect on the A50’s. I cannot say if the A50’s will suffer the same hum.

my old usb headset didn't have this problem, so I think it will be fine
I was told that if I plugged it in optical the sound would be better?

To silence the noises, all you have to do, is uninstall the sound cards that produce the noises... the motherboard's integrated sound card, and the soundcard integrated in the graphics card. Two sound devices to be uninstalled from the Device Manager.

Motherboard's sound card: This PC / right click / Manage / Device Manager / Sound Video and Game Controllers...

Graphics card sound card: This PC / right click / Manage / Device Manager / Audio Inputs and Outputs /

I have no problem with usb devices
I need the graphics card sound card for my speakers. the sound card of my motherboard is disabled from the bios and therefore does not appear in the device manager
I still uninstalled the two outputs containing "nvidia high definition audio" in Audio Inputs and Outputs, and they reinstalled as soon as the pc restarted
(there was still sound even with the outputs uninstalled..?)

Maybe if you disable instead of uninstall the Nvidia audio driver... I've done this before and uninstalling drivers makes them reinstall when rebooting the computer, but disabling them leaves them disabled.

drivers are disabled after reboot
thank you very much for your help, but I don't really understand what it's for as my speakers are connected to my graphics card. indeed there is no more background noise but there is no sound at all - my question was would a sound card be useful for my situation?

Thank you very much for your patience and your time

Ground loops are caused by two issues, either external equipment that isn't properly grounded, or internal wiring issues behind the wall, with coaxial cables or dimmers being the primary cause. If it's the former, then just making sure all your equipment (computer & speakers) are connected to the same power strip should solve the problem.

If the latter, then fiber optic cables can in some instances, break the ground loop, but not in all cases. Typically optical will only break a ground loop if your speakers are being powered by an amp using 2 prong power adapters (i.e. no ground pin).
