I bought assassins creed unity for pc, but it says that i need an activation key. do i need to buy one, or is it already printed somewhere on the disk?

It is Ubisoft.

You need to send in a blood sample, to be considered as a potential costumer.
If they decide that you are not pirate scum (which you are flagged as by Ubisoft by default, when gaming on a PC), they send out a guy with a retina scanner - to keep your credentials for logging into Uplay.

You must of course be online always to play a single player game, so they can keep track of your whereabouts at all times.

If you complete the above steps; you now have access to 15% of the game, and must buy 311 DLC packs and a Season Pass to have the whole game, which by the way does not really work.

You are now renting the game from Ubisoft - since you cannot claim ownership of digitally distributed games.

Have fun!

Uplay is no delight. Not that I like any drm, simply entering a key via the setup process should be enough. Even an online verification doesn't require all the 3rd party gaming crud. That being said, compared to steam uplay flat sucks. It has so many connection errors, server down messages, server unavailable messages, and due to this try getting it to accept your newly created username and password. It's evil. It would have just been more painless sending ubisoft a home video of me peeling off the cello wrap and extracting the disc from the box for the first time along with the activation code.
