Do I need any special cables for this monitor?

Im looking into getting a BenQ XL2430T and I have a gtx 970, would I need any special cables for this monitor since its 144hz or would a standard hdmi do?

Yes a standard HDMI would be fine.

No , with Standard hdmi you get 60fps at the most....not more.
If you want 144hz then there is ONLY 1 WAY to go and that is Displayport

Your monitor has D-sub / DVI-DL / HDMI1.4x2 / DP1.2 / Mic in inputs.

HDMI 1.4 increases the maximum resolution to 4K × 2K, i.e. 4096×2160 at 24 Hz (which is a resolution used with digital theaters) or 3840×2160 (Ultra HD) at 24 Hz/25 Hz/30 Hz;

If you had 2.0 you'd be fine - it runs at twice the speed. Try a Display Port cable to one of your DP ports on the gtx.
