The board and Opteron CPUs I'm buying for a Home server supports DDR3 EEC RAM and DDR3 Non EEC RAM. However I'm not sure if I should spend extra on getting EEC RAM.

I understand that for large work environments with multiple users accessing the server, EEC ram would be important. But this machine is only going to be accessed by a few users at a time and is more or less a workstation to help run a few heavy programs I need for work.

What do people recommend? I'm looking at getting either 2 of these: http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/198963/MEMORY_ECC_DDR-3_RAM/Kingston/KVR16R11D4_8.asp

OR

😉 In other words, not the typical Home Server then - very good, still don't think I'd mess with ECC for the expense and that it's slow, todays DRAM is far and away superior to DRAM of yesteryear, I typically build small business servers based on the 4770K and more recently the X79 platform with the 4830K
What is the purpose of the home server, seldom ever see a need for ECC or an Opteron in a Home (or even small business server) and as far as DRAM - and in particular if going ECC - buy the full amount you want in a single package that way the sticks are tested to work together

Basically the server is going to be managing media/backups of my work and from a few other PCs in the household. It also needed to be capable of running some heavy multithreaded concrete analysis programs for my work and also will allow me to remotely access the machine to do this. I'll be using a few virtual machines as the program has only been made to run on Windows but I want the rest of the server work to be on Linux.

There's a few other things I want it to do as well, like host some websites and maybe use it as a game server. It's going to be used for more than just a NAS.

Currently even my 2500K in my main machine can't handle this well.

EDIT: Board is this: Supermicro H8DCL-6F (http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron4000/SR56x0/H8DCL-6F.cfm)
