I was thinking about getting a Asus optimized Z170 1151 motherboard for gaming, but i have a 500w power supply, will i need a higher Psu or am i fine right now? Also, does a new motherboard need different cables or do the cables i have for it from my 500w psu is fine? and last question, Does 1151 support a i5 7600k?

sorry, i'm new to building computers.:(

Motherboard: Asus optimized Z170 ATX HDMI DVI-D Dual DDR4 3400 LGA1151 socket for 6th Gen Intel Pro Gaming Motherboards (Z170 PRO GAMING)

Solution
For at least the next several months you should only get a z270 motherboard for a 7xxx serries CPU. As SR-71 mentioned the 170/110 model boards require a BIOS update which on 95% of boards can ONLY be done with a 6xxx serries CPU.

In regards to your main question your motherboard has almost zero influence on your power requirements and all boards and PSUs for like the last 8-10 years have been using the 24 pin connector standard (used to be a 20 pin). So in short your motherboard alone should not incluence if you need a new PSU.

Now seeing that you are getting a overclockable CPU then you should have a quality PSU to provide stable voltages.
So what is model is your PSU and what is GPU and we can tell you if that is sufficient or not.

I have a msi geforce gtx 1050 ti and im not sure about the power supply, all i know is its 500w.

Well when you are in front of your computer then will need to know the model number.
Your 1050 does not need much power so 500w is more then enough, even 350 is fine.
But with you not knowiing the brand/model at all, if it is a low-grade cheapo PSU then that 500w unit is actually struggling to maintain 250-300w load and when it dies it is going to fry other parts with it.

Thank you so much! i really appreciate your guys help. this will defiantly help me when i start upgrading my computer!

Sure it will work. But personally I would rather buy cheeper Z270 mobo and better GPU like 1060 6 Gb, or even 1070 (budget allowing).

ok, that is a good idea! Thank you so much, i have been worrying about this for a while, and this takes the weight off my sholders! When i get home, ill look at the power supply and get back to you later! thanks

Agreed, the $200+ motherboards really dont provide enough to warrant the cost for most users. If you NEED a certian number of m2 slots or usb 3.0 for a business purpose then it can make sense or when you just have a $2k plus budget. Otherwise you can get the same performance from a $150 board and put the savings into parts that will make a difference.

What psu do you recommend i should get when i upgrade, what model of psu is better than mine right now? Thank you so much.

Anything Seasonic or Superflower is good, most all XFX models are good, EVGA B2/G2 are good.
Hit us up again when you are ready to buy and we can see what is on sale and is the best buy for the money.
