Hi all,

Sorry for noob question but thanks in advance. Basically this is my current set-up:

128GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge, and a MSI B75MA-P45 (MS-7798) motherboard along with a CIT 500CB PSU and a DVD-RW.

I wanted to upgrade my graphics card so purchased the following "EVGA GeForce GTX 670 (2048 MB) (02G-P4-2670-KR) Graphics Card". Sadly I was not thinking properly about power as current graphics card draws enough from the motherboard. I do not have a 6 pin PCI-E power cable coming from the PSU but I do have a spare SATA power cable.

My questions are:

1. Can my PSU handle this graphics card with rest of the set-up?

2. Should I buy a SATA power to 6 pin PCI-E cable as I have seen this is not recommended as the PSU is probably cheap and likely to blow up?

3. If not could people recommend a PSU that would work with the new graphics in the current set-up and any other recommendations of things I might have forgotten to think about?

Once again, thanks!

Solution
The GPU's real power consumption is closer to 200W, add 100W for the rest of your system and a 50% margin on top of that to account for aging/long-term stability or minor additions, and you should be able to get away with a good quality PSU with a 500W-ish rating capable of providing 400W or so (~35A) on the 12V rail.

The 500B should easily get the job done.
I wouldnt mate in all honesty, cit are pretty more ,it only has 27a on the 12v & is really to all intents a 400w psu

assuming youre on a tight budget with buying an oldish card like the 670 I would go for the evga 500

the bronze is 5 quid more but substantially better

Hi both,

Thank you for your replies I Wil definitely look to replace the PSU for one of the advised. I will probably get the bronze version as not really on a budget just playing RPG so don't need anything too special.

Once again thanks.

Sorry, will this be powerful enough to run everything as I have read somewhere that the GPU recommends a power of at least 600w?

Thanks

Ok I shall go with what you advise as you sound like you know what you are on about! Thanks muchly!

The GTX 960 is about the same price as gtx 670 but requires less power and connectors, you should be able to get away with it on your current psu. From what I read it trails the gtx 670 on performance but not by much.

Yes, the GTX960 would be worth considering.

PSU-wise though, I would strongly recommend against using the CIT-branded PSU any longer than absolutely necessary - PSUs usually end up on the tier five "DO NOT USE" list for good reasons.
