Do I need the 12v ATX cable plugged into my Z97 Pro Gamer?

I just switched PC cases and because of the position of the PSU, the 12v cable can't reach the socket.

I also can't get it to boot. The LED on the power on button will light up, GPU light, fan will all turn on for at most, a second before stopping.

This could be anything but I have a suspicion that its to do with not having this cable in. In the manual it says that the computer won't turn on if its not connected but I want to double check before I go and buy a new PSU with a longer cable

You know, these plugs and sockets are not there for decoration.
Of course you need it.

You don't need a new PSU if that PSU is OK for your machine, you can just buy an extender.

If your case has gaps on the side the motherboard is attached to, thread the cpu cable out and then back in at top where the plug is instead of going over stuff to reach it.

Generally though, when it is too short, you have to go the shortest route that would be overt he motherboard.
I have also had this problem

It's too short even if I had the wire in the most direct route
