Hey! I'm thinking of buying a new SSD to add to my pc for faster load times in games. Will I need to backup my whole OS and pc if I just want to install games on it or can I just plug it in and install stuff on it?

I simply have a WD Blue 1TB Hardrive with basically everyhting on it (OS, games, etc.)
Just to add an SSD (or any other drive), you don't need to do anything with the current drive.

For your Steam games, you can have them on whichever drive you choose.
Steam games location
In the steam client:
Steam
Settings
Downloads
Steam Library Folders
Add library folder

To move an already installed game
Games library
Right click the game
Properties
Local Files
Move Install Folder

Well upgrading your system from HDD to SSD is one of the best thing you do with your system. And the easiest way is to physically install it, connect the right cables, and reinstall Windows from scratch. But when you don’t want to deal with setting up Windows and wants to get all of your critical data, files and folders on a new hard drive then it might be a tough task.

I will suggest you to check out this blog explaining all the methods of moving OS from HDD to SSD - https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/how-to-migrate-windows-10-from-old-hdd-to-ssd/

Hope this will help.
