Do I need to buy an adapter?

I finally got my build all done up and ready to go and now I find that my monitor plug doesn't fit. Both the motherboard and the video card have the same port. 24 pins and a little dash (if that makes sense to anyone). My monitor has a blue smaller plug. I even have a white adapter but that doesn't seem to fit either.

Can anyone help?

You'd need an active adapter DVI-D to VGA. Something like
